MEET THE BLUE ANGELS: Considered by many to be the finest military flight team in the world, the United States Navy Blue Angels maintain a rigourous training regiman and a demanding performance schedule to ensure their glossy reputation is not tarnished. The team currently flies the highly capable F/A-18 Hornet, and in the hands of the Blue Angel elite fighter pilots, this fighter jet presents an aerial spectacle that is imposing, inspiring, and breathtaking, complete with high-speed, head-to-head passes, graceful formations of spiraling, rolling, coordinated loops, climbs, and dives, and, of course, the exhilirating, heart-stopping "sneak passes" that always seem to catch the audience off guard.

INTERESTING BLUE ANGEL FACTS
  • FIRST WOMEN ON THE TEAM: Marine Capt. Katie Higgins, 27, has been selected to fly as a the C-130 "Fat Albert" demonstration pilot starting in October, 2014.
  • FALLING POLLS: The aerobatic group that would eventually become known as the "Blue Angels" was pulled together, in the summer of 1946, at the request of the Chief of Naval Operations, Chester W. Nimitiz, and Navy Secretary, James Forrestal, whose motivation was to boost the U.S. Navy's waning public image after World War II.
  • AN ACE AND HIS MEN: The man called upon to origninally lead the group was Lieutenant Commander Roy "Butch" Voris, a veteran fighter pilot with eight "kills" and a gifted instructor pilot. He was tasked with staffing the rest of the pilots and the crew. They flew the propellor-driven fighter, the Grumman F6F Hellcat.
  • EARLY ACTS: A typical show routine for the early Blue Angels was to demonstrate the interception of an enemy fighter plane attacking a friendly bomber. The enemy fighter would soon fall victim to the Blues, start spewing smoke, and then a white parachute would emerge signaling the escape of the enemy pilot. The show lasted 17 minutes.
  • NAMED AFTER A NIGHT CLUB: Navy brass originally wanted to call the team the "Navy Blue Lancers," but original team member Lieutenant Maurice "Wick" Wickendoll suggested "Blue Angels" after seeing an advertisment for a New York social club with the same name. The rest of the team liked it and it became "official."
